Who Am I?
This is an exercise we can use to begin to still
our minds, to bring them under our conscious control. Through this exercise we
can begin to contact our soul. It can go on for a long time, and there are no
"right" answers!
Relax your body. Now ask yourself, "Who am
I?" Focus your consciousness on your head, and ask yourself, "Am I my
thoughts?"
Now take your focus to each part of your body,
resting briefly on your throat, your chest, your arms, your hands, your fingers,
your solar plexus, your heart, your stomach, your pelvis, your legs, your feet,
your toes. Ask yourself, "Am I my body?"
Now remember the last thing you ate, and the last
thing you drank. Remember the last music you listened to. Imagine the last
flower you smelled. Remember the feel of your lover's body. Now ask yourself,
"Am I my senses?"
Now bring your attention to whatever you are
feeling at the moment. If you aren't feeling anything, imagine an extreme
feeling that you have had recently. Perhaps you were really angry at someone.
Now ask yourself, "Am I my emotions?"
Now focus on what you most love about yourself,
and what you most dislike. Perhaps you love it that you are really friendly to
animals, and perhaps you hate it that whenever you get upset, you cry. Now ask
yourself, "Am I my opinions about what is acceptable and what is not?"
Now focus on the people you love, those who you
are with every day. Now ask yourself, "Am I my relationships?"
Now turn your attention to your work, what you do
every day, and ask yourself, "Am I what I do?"
Now focus on your religious beliefs, any
identifications that you have in the spiritual realm, the church you go to, and
ask yourself, "Am I my beliefs?"
Now imagine your face before you were born and
ask yourself, "Where did I come from?"
Now imagine reading your obituary in the
newspaper. What does it say? Are you your obituary? Ask yourself again,
"Who am what the newspaper says?"
Now imagine yourself as a corpse. If you are
lying down, you can rest yourself in this position. Imagine your body old, grey,
hard, dead. Ask yourself, "Where did I go?"
Now focus your attention on your heart and
visualize it radiating golden light throughout your whole body. Ask yourself,
"Who am I?"
